From a 4m² Balcony to the Cosmos: My Journey with the SVBONY SV705C

My Journey with SVBONY

The Urban Astronomer’s Challenge

I am an amateur astronomer in Portimão, in the south of Portugal, observing from a balcony under heavy light pollution. Operating in such a limited space—just 4m²—means I have to squeeze every bit of performance out of my equipment. For a long time, I realized that the key was to have a truly versatile astronomy camera that could handle the Moon, planets, and deep‑sky objects without forcing me to change my whole setup.

The SV705C: An Extraordinary All-Terrain Camera

That is how I ended up building my entire balcony observatory around the SVBONY SV705C. It started as my planetary and lunar camera, but very quickly I discovered that it is also an excellent all‑rounder for DSO imaging.

My most memorable experience was using my SV705C to capture Jupiter's cloud bands and Great Red Spot details right from my balcony. Paired with the SV216 3× extender and high frame rates with ROI, I watched those fine atmospheric structures emerge live on my screen as I recorded video.

One Night, Two Worlds

What made it truly special was switching the exact same SV705C that same night to deep-sky imaging. With SV305 Pro + SV165 40mm guiding keeping stars perfectly round, I watched the Orion Nebula reveal its intricate structure after stacking short exposures.

This left a deep impression because the SV705C proved itself as an extraordinary all-terrain camera: high-resolution planetary work during one session, then beautiful DSO detail from the same balcony just hours later. Realizing I had a complete observatory in such limited space transformed how I see what's possible from urban locations.

Inspiring the 'Astronomia de Varanda' Community

These balcony sessions produced my best "Astronomia de Varanda" (Balcony Astronomy) YouTube content. Those stacked images became some of my most popular videos because they prove that serious astrophotography works even from small urban spaces.

My mission is to show others they don't need multiple expensive cameras or dark skies to get serious results. My SVBONY equipment has transformed my own balcony into my primary "special observation location," inspiring viewers worldwide that they too can capture stunning astronomy images without huge budgets.

Looking to the Future

My dream addition is the SV605CC for faint DSOs, which would allow me to keep the SV705C as my planetary/lunar specialist while expanding my deep-sky capabilities. I also hope to see an SVBONY all-in-one imaging controller—a wireless hub to manage cameras, guiding, EAF, and power—to make balcony setups even more efficient.
