Emberiza cirlus: The Mediterranean Beauty
1. Physical Characteristics (The Pattern Master)
-
The Male’s Mask: The male is striking, featuring a bright yellow face with a bold black throat and a black stripe through the eye. It also has a distinctive greenish-olive band across its breast.
-
Complex Plumage: Its back is chestnut-brown with heavy dark streaks. This combination of yellow, black, green, and brown in one small area is a "torture test" for optical clarity.
-
The Female: Much more camouflaged, looking similar to a female Yellowhammer but with a distinct grayish-green rump (instead of rufous) and more defined facial streaking.
