Description
An ultra-deep narrowband integration of the Elephant's Trunk Nebula (IC 1396) captured entirely from my backyard under a heavy light-polluted Bortle 7 sky. Total exposure time is over 40 hours. Processed in classic Hubble Palette (SHO) with separate short-exposure broadband RGB stars to preserve natural stellar colors. Total Integration Data: - H-alpha: 16 hours (600s subs) - OIII: 12 hours (600s subs) - SII: 15 hours (600s subs) - RGB Stars: 2 hours total (15s subs)
Background Introduction
This project was born from the desire to capture the immense and faint molecular cloud of IC 1396 at its full extension, showcasing the deep, dark dust lanes of the Elephant's Trunk. Shooting from a backyard in the Venetian plains under a Bortle 7 sky was a massive challenge due to light pollution and incoming summer storms. It required immense patience over multiple nights to stack more than 40 hours of clean data. The Svbony SV555 refractor performed flawlessly, tracking and resolving the finest dark structures and gas filaments with incredible contrast, allowing me to beat the city glow through ultra-narrowband filters.
