Physical Characteristics (Identification)
-
Appearance: A small, "chunky" bird (12-13 cm) with a big head and a short tail.
-
The Male (Breeding): Highly distinctive with a jet-black head, a striking white half-collar, and a deep orange-red breast. Its back is dark with brown streaks.
-
The Female: More subdued tones with a brown head and a paler orange throat/breast, providing excellent camouflage in the heathlands.
-
The Voice: Its most famous trait is its call—a sharp, clicking sound that resembles two stones being struck together ("tac-tac"). This is how it earned the name "Stonechat."
