Description
A widefield view of the Elephant Trunk Nebula and its surrounding emission, captured using my new SVBONY SV535 105mm f/2.8 APO and the SV220 dual-band filter. I collected around 500 Hα/OIII exposures over two nights at 60 seconds each, followed by another 500 30-second RGB exposures to bring natural star colors back into the image. The narrowband and RGB data were combined and processed in PixInsight, with the goal of preserving the faint surrounding dust and emission while keeping the stars and nebula colors balanced and natural. The scope and filter is a perfect combo together with my ZWO ASI 535MC AIR camera - I'm really pleased of how this turned out.
Background Introduction
The Elephant Trunk Nebula (IC 1396A) is a dense cloud of gas and dust located within the much larger IC 1396 emission complex in the constellation Cepheus. The distinctive dark structure is surrounded by glowing hydrogen and oxygen emission and contains regions of active star formation. Rather than focusing only on the familiar trunk-shaped nebula, this image was composed as a widefield view to show its connection to the much larger and much fainter surrounding clouds and dust structures.
