My Journey with SVBONY

The Setup

The other night, I headed out with a clear goal: practicing "star hopping." For those unfamiliar with the technique, it involves navigating by following lines and stellar patterns to track down faint, otherwise invisible deep-sky targets. It's a rewarding exercise that requires plenty of patience and practice.

Just as I got started, a mom and her two children walked up, naturally curious about the gear and what I was doing.

The Pivot

At first, I started explaining the technical side of star hopping, but I quickly realized the children weren't terribly interested in the mechanics. So, I pivoted.

I smiled and asked, "Would you like to see a planet?"

Their faces lit up instantly. I swung the Svbony refractor telescope around and brought Venus into view—and they were in absolute awe. Next, I pointed the scope toward a star far, far away: Vega. The little girl let out an excited squeak, and her older brother thought it was the coolest thing ever.

We kept the journey going:

  • The Moon:

  • Showed them the rugged beauty of the lunar craters up close.

  • M101 Galaxy:

  •  Showed them the galaxy I was actively imaging on my tablet using the Seestar, inviting them to scroll through a gallery of other deep-sky objects I've captured.

They had the absolute best time, staying for 30 or 40 minutes just soaking in the wonders of the night sky, while mom looked on with immense gratitude. Before they headed out, I handed the kids some stickers I received from Celestron and gave mom the QR code to join Community Stargazers.

The Takeaway

I never did get around to practicing star hopping that night. Instead, I got to do something infinitely better: share the wonders of the universe with the next generation.

That's why I created Community Stargazers.

And that is also what your ongoing support helps me do every single day. I am eternally grateful!
