IC 1396 - The Elephant's Trunk Nebula IC 1396 is a vast emission nebula associated with an open star cluster, located in the northern constellation of Cepheus, about 2,400 light-years from Earth. The region extends across the sky for a diameter of over three degrees (about six times the diameter of the full Moon) and is actively illuminated and ionized by the massive and extremely hot blue supergiant star HD 206267 located at its center. The most famous and frequently photographed structure within this enormous complex is the dark substructure cataloged as IC 1396A, commonly known as the "Elephant's Trunk." This time I wanted to capture it in SHO with magenta stars typical of this Hubble Palette version.
