SVBONY September Astrophotography Challenge: Target – North America Nebula & Carina Nebula!
Hello Astrophotographers and SVBONY Community,
September brings beautiful transition‑season nights for deep‑sky imaging across our planet! For this month’s astrophotography challenge, we set two wonderful deep‑sky targets for different hemispheres. Northern‑hemisphere participants shoot the North America Nebula (NGC 7000); southern‑hemisphere participants target the Carina Nebula (NGC 3372).
The North America Nebula (NGC 7000) is a large emission nebula in Cygnus, near Deneb. Its distinctive continent‑shaped outline is formed by glowing hydrogen gas interspersed with intricate dark dust lanes, located roughly 2000 light‑years away.
The Carina Nebula (NGC 3372) is one of the brightest, most spectacular star‑forming regions in the southern sky. Filled with turbulent gas clouds, dramatic dust pillars and massive hot stars including Eta Carinae, it delivers incredible texture and color for southern imagers.
🔭 September Imaging & Field Tips
North America Nebula (NGC 7000, Northern Hemisphere)
How to Locate It: Find Deneb, the brightest star in Cygnus. The North America Nebula lies close by, often imaged together with the Pelican Nebula (IC 5070) in one wide‑field frame.
Gear & Filter Strategy: This large surface‑brightness emission nebula benefits greatly from H‑alpha or dual‑band narrowband filters, which suppress light pollution and pull out faint red hydrogen structures. Wide‑angle lenses or small refractors work perfectly for this extended object.
Integration & Calibration: Use longer sub‑exposures (300 s recommended) and build solid total integration time. Capture darks, flats and bias calibration frames to reveal delicate dust lanes and faint nebulosity in stacking.
Carina Nebula (NGC 3372, Southern Hemisphere)
How to Locate It: Positioned in the constellation Carina. Easily recognizable even in binoculars, it features the famous variable star Eta Carinae at its core.
Gear & Filter Strategy: Both LRGB broadband and narrowband Hubble‑palette workflows produce stunning results. Narrowband filters bring out fine filamentary structures within this huge stellar nursery.
Integration & Calibration: Mix shorter subs for bright core regions and longer subs for faint outer nebulosity. Full calibration frames are critical to balance bright cores and dim outer gas clouds.
